For
Official Use Only (FOUO)
FOUO is
not a classification but a
designation applied to unclassified information to identify
material which may not be appropriate for public release. To be
considered
FOUO, this type of information must
be exempt from mandatory release to the public under the
Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
The FOIA specifies nine categories of information which can be
withheld from release if requested by a member of the public.
Although not classified, FOUO information should be handled in a
manner that provides reasonable assurance that unauthorized
persons do not gain access.
Handling, storage and destruction standards can be found in AR 380-5 and
AR 25-55, The Department of the Army Freedom of Information Act
Program.
* ALL DA personnel should begin applying marking standards covered in DoDM 5200.01, Volume 2 and 4 which covers FOUO and classified marking standards. The next update to AR 380-5 will reflect these new standards.
